DIRECT FILE BILL PASSES HOUSE JUDICIARY COMMITTEE

HB 1271 would allow courts to work with DAs to determine whether to prosecute youth as adults

InterMountain is pleased to announce that a bill that would reform Colorado’s juvenile justice system and allow courts to have a hearing before prosecuting youth as adults successfully passed the House Judiciary Committee March 8 on a 9-2. Reps. Mark Waller and Bob Gardner voted no.  The bill would change the process of “direct file,” which allows prosecutors the legal authority to unilaterally transfer juvenile offenders  to criminal court without judicial review. Colorado is one of only four states that allows direct file.
